Inside the Operating Theater: Nadine Khan’s Medical Drama “Benj Kolly” Explores Vulnerability and Power

Egyptian cinema and television have long explored social realism, family dynamics, and institutional corruption, but rarely has the lens turned inward on the high-stakes, pressure-cooker environment of the modern operating room. Enter acclaimed director Nadine Khan, whose latest television project, Benj Kolly (Total Anesthesia), made its debut in August 2026 on the Shahid platform.

A Journey into the Depths of the Medical World

Benj Kolly follows the intense, closed-door dynamics of a specialized hospital, immediately immersing viewers in an atmospheric world where seconds dictate the difference between life and death. The narrative centers on Dr. Doaa, a dedicated and self-made anesthesiologist attempting to forge her own professional path. While striving to escape the shadow of her prestigious medical lineage—her father is a celebrated neurosurgeon—Doaa faces immediate resistance and institutional hostility.

Chief among her adversaries is Dr. Azazy, a prominent surgeon whose established authority is threatened by Doaa’s exceptional clinical precision. What begins as professional friction and workplace rivalry spirals into high drama when the two characters find themselves bound by a dangerous secret. Following an unexpected confession made by a patient waking up from total anesthesia, Doaa and Azazy are forced into an uneasy, high-stakes alliance that tests their ethics, resilience, and humanity.

The series features an accomplished ensemble cast, including Salma Abu Deif, Diab, Kamal Abu Raya, Ola Roshdy, Salwa Mohamed Ali, Mohsen Mohie El-Din, Mohamed Mehran, Lobna Wanes, and Diaa Abdel Khalek. Written by Mohamed Soliman Abdel Malek, produced by Abdullah Abu El-Fotouh, and accompanied by an evocative original score by Khaled Kamar, the production sets a new visual and narrative benchmark for regional medical dramas.

Nadine Khan’s Vision: Humanizing the Medical Profession

Rather than relying on fast-paced, superficial medical tropes, Khan’s direction prioritizes the emotional landscape of the characters and the complex psychology of survival under immense pressure
